EFFECTS OF ORAL INSULIN AND TRYPSINIZED FORMULA MILK ON SMALL INTESTINAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN NEWBORN PIGS

To study whether insulin in milk and trypsinized formula milk are responsible for the rapid postnatal tissue growth and functional maturation in the small intestine of newborn pigs,small intestinal tissue mass,length tissue structure,mucosal DNA,RNA and protein contents,and lactase,maltase and alkaline phosphatase activities in the small intestinal tissue contents between piglets bottle fed formula milk(Milk)and piglets bottle fed either formula milk supplemented with insulin(60mIU/ml)(IMilk)or trypsinized formula milk(TMilk)for 3 days were compared.There were no significant differences in the small intestinal tissue mass,length,tissue structure,and mucosal DNA and RNA contents( P 0 05)of piglets fed IMilk or TMilk compared with those of piglets fed Milk.The mucosal weight( P 0 05) and protein content( P 0 01)in the small intestine,specifically in the distal ileum( P 0 01),in IMilk fed piglets were greater than those in Milk fed piglets.Total activities of lactase,maltase and alkaline phosphatase in the small intestinal contents of TMilk fed piglets( P 0 01)increased significantly in comparison with those of Milk fed piglets.The results indicate that oral administration of insulin stimulates a increase in mucosal weight and protein content in the small intestine,specifically in the distal ileum,and total activities of lactase,maltase and alkaline phosphatase in the small intestinal contents.The trypsinized formula milk contains some bioactive substance that can stimulate the newborn intestinal development.
