EFFECT OF HUMUS ON THE SHIFT OF MERCURY FROM THE SOIL TO THE PLANTS

LI Shi-xing, LI Bo, WANG Ding-yong (College of Resources and Environment, Southwest Agricultural University,Chongqing 400716, China)  
A pot culture experiment with lettuce ( Lactuca sativa var. angustana) was conducted to investigate the effects of humus application on the shift of mercury from the soil to the lettuce plants. The results indicated that humus application inhibited soil Hg to shift to the plants, Hg fixation rate by the humus being over 90%. The inhibitive effect varied with the kinds of humus in the soil, HA (humic acid) showing a more significant inhibition than FA (fulvic acid).
