Testing modifications for the system of rice intensification (SRI) to achieve super-high-yield in the Sichuan basin

SRI (system of rice intensification) is a new theory of rice culture.The typical characteristics of this system are to transplant single seedling at 2-leaf age, in square pattern, with wide spacing between plants (about 50 cm),use a lot of organic fertilizer, hand weeding,and keep the paddy soil moist (but not flooded).The significant variation of biology,such as yield and yield component was observed under SRI cultivation,and the yields were increased significantly.However, there were some constraints for application such as low number of plants,adaptation to the low solar radiation condition in Sichuan,and it was hard to transplant young seedling at 2-leaf age in multiple cropping systems. The management measures for weeding and keeping the soil moist (not saturated) were complex and laborious.So,the trials over 2 years were carried out to improve SRI according to the agro-ecological conditions in Sichuan.The results showed through modifications (such as oblong and triangle transplanting pattern)grain yields exceeded 12 t/ha,with 46?% more than that of control in field trial.
