China’s Social Acknowledgement of Western Medicine in Late Qing Dynasty

Hao Xianzhong
The arrival of Western medicine caused a subtle psychological impact on modern China’s social strata. After hesitation and reiteration, the ruling class finally identified with it and accomplished the reform of China’s medical system. In order to rescue the nation and keep the race, the intellectual group advocated the development of Western medicine with evolutionism. The Chinese medical circles kept a tolerant attitude to research and compare it with Chinese medicine. They even tried to find a new way to develop Chinese medicine. The Chinese public took an attitude of fear, doubt, and puzzle at first, and then accepted, and even relied on it. They showed unprecedented enthusiasm for it.
