Performance Analysis of Electromagnetic Continuously Variable Transmission

An electromagnetic continuously variable transmission (ECVT) which had strong electromagnetic coupling characteristic was proposed. Its work principle and electromagnetic characteristic were introduced. Based on the two cases which were with battery and without battery, the possible operating modes were discussed. Since the mutual reluctances between the AC windings of the inner rotor and stator were negligible, the mathematical model of the ECVT was developed. With the proposed analytical electromagnetic equations, the effects such as flux density, back-EMF, flux linkage and cogging torque in the two air gaps were plotted. The transient simulation results of the ECVT with battery illustrated the feasibility of the operating mode analysis. The vehicle with the ECVT has better fuel economy compared with a vehicle with a conventional automatic transmission.
