Between “Problem” and “Imperialism”:On John King Fairbank's Studies of Mao Zedong

WANG Ya-ru;Department of Philosophy,Nanjing University;
Regarding John King Fairbank's theoretical framework,Mao Zedong,who is good at availing himself of the political realities,and uses the Marxism theories to serve the concrete practice of Chinese revolution. Its core feature is to replace industrial workers by poor peasants as the protagonist of the revolution,and then gradually to establish a program that suits the Chinese soil. John King Fairbank's creative "misreading"of Mao Zedong and his ideas provides a knowledge picture for the later generation of "Maoism"in the Western academic circles. The top-level design of studies of Mao Zedong in the sense of "overallness",the multi-dimensional discussion and generalization from multiple perspectives,and the deep sketch of Mao Zedong and his ideological portraits, have undoubtedly provided an important thrust for the beginning of the academicization of foreign studies of Mao Zedong.
