EXTRACTION MECHANISM OF CERIUM(Ⅳ) FROM SULPHURIC ACID SOLUTION BY MONO(2-ETHYL HEXYL)-2-ETHYL HEXYL PHOSPHONATE

The partition equilibria of cerium (Ⅳ) between sulphuric acid andHEH (EH) P in hexane were investigated. Extraction mechanism ofcerium (Ⅳ) and sulphuric acid was obtained at different acidities, viz:[H~(4+)]_(aq). +[HSO_4~-]_(aq). +[(HL)_2]_(oag). K_H [H_2SO_4·2HL]_(org).At ow aqueous acidity, cerium (Ⅳ) is extracted by a cation-exchan-ge reaction in which hydrogen ion is displaced:[Ce~(4+)]_(aq). +3[(HL)_2]_(org).K_1 [CeL_2 (HL_2)_2]_(org). +4 [H~+]_(aq).and at high aqueous acidity by a solvation reaction similar to that with neutral phosphorus extractants:[Ce~(4+)]_(aq). +2[HSO_4~-]_(aq). +[SO_4~(2-)]_(aq)+[(HL)_2]_(org) K_2 [H_2Ce(SO_4)_3·2HL]_(org).Extraction mechanism for the case that the organic phase is satu-rated with cerium (Ⅳ) was investigated at low aqueous acidity:[Ce~(4+)]_(aq). +2[(HL)_2]_(org). K_1~″[CeL_4]_(org). +4[H~+]_(aq).[Ce(SO_4)~(2+)]_(aq). +[(HL)_2]_(org). [Ce(SO_4)·L_2]_(org). +2[H~a]_(aq).The composition of the extraction complex is Ce(SO_4)_(0.5)·L_3·xH_2OThe effect of different solvents and temperatures on the cerium (Ⅳ)extraction was observed. The concentration constants K_H K_1 and K_2,obtained are as follows:K_H=2.0×10~(-3) (18.4N H_2SO_4). 1gK_1=5.51 and 1gK_2=3.23 (16. 1N H_2SO_4). The thermodynamic functions(△H, △Z and △S) of the extractionreaction were calculated. The IR and NMR studies were carried outfor the organic phase
