Effect of Yttrium on Microstructure and Corrosion Properties of AZ91 Alloy

The microstructure and corrosion property of AZ91 magnesium alloy with trace addition of Y were investigated.The microstructures were observed by OM and XRD,and the corrosion properties were studied by SEM and XRD.The results showed that in the alloys with Y a second phase Al4MgY occurred,the grains became finer with the increasing of Y,the microstructure changed from the dendrites to equiaxed crystals and the microstructure was the finest when Y content up to 1.52%.β-Mg17Al12 phase was decreased and to be incontinuous,dispersed and distributed uniformily when added Y in AZ91 alloy,the corrosion resistance of alloy was improved,in 3.5% NaCl solution,the corrosion resistance of alloy with 1.52%Y was the best.
