Influence of GdB_6 on Performance of Hot-Pressing Sintering B_4C Material

The performance of boron carbide-gadolinium hexaboride composite material prepared by hot-pressing sintering method was tested in this experiment.The study shows that,with the increase of gadolinium boride quantity from 2% to 8%, the hardness of boron carbide- gadolinium hexaboride composite increases constantly and its hardness raise than pure boron carbide by nearly 78%, and that the bending strength of boron carbide-gadolinium hexaboride composite decreases constantly, and that the fracture toughness of the boron carbide-gadolinium boride composite drops at first, then increases. The fracture scanning electron microscope analysis of boron carbide-gadolinium hexaboride composite material finds that sintering state of pure boron carbide is altered by adding gadolinium hexaboride. It is also found that with the increase of adding amount boron carbide crystal grain grows up obviously and crystallite arrangement is so compact that pores disappear gradually.
