Stem Cell Transplantation in Treatment of Sick Sinus Syndrome

LIU Hong,QIU Lin(The Second Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University,Taiyuan 030001,China)
Sick sinus syndrome refers to the abnormal function of the sinus node.Traditional treatment for sick sinus syndrome is to implant an electronic pacemaker. However, the advent of the bio-pacemaker,along with the development of various molecular biology techniques,is providing new options for the treatment of sick sinus syndrome.A bio-pacemaker uses molecular biology and related technologies to either repair or replace the damaged cells responsible for regulating the pace/rhythm of the heart, allowing normal function to resume.Possible repair mechanisms include gene therapy,or gene therapy plus stem cell transplantation. This article is a review of the ongoing research into the use of stem cell transplantation for the treatment of sick sinus syndrome.
