GOALS AND RESEARCH TOPICS OF REAL WORLD COMPUTING PROGRAM --An Introduction to The Japanese Long Term Program After the Abortive Fifth Generation Computer Program--

The long term research program after Japanese Fifth Generation Computer Program arouses interest of the whole world. This paper introduces the ten-year long term “Real World Computing” (short for RWC) program, developed by Japanese computer scientists and sponsorred by Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). Goals and research topics of RWC, and its strategy as well, are described in detail. RWC is also called "New Information processing Technology'"program, which will lay the technical foundations for the information society that Japan anticipated in the next centry.
