Toxic effect of cadmium on the female rat gonad

Objective Due to lack of previous works, subchronic cadmium effect on the female gonad was carried out. Methods Rats were divided into four groups with cadmium daily dose 1, 0 5, 0 25, and 0 mg/kg respectively,five days a week, up to six weeks Results The cadmium content in the ovary was significantly higher in exposed rats than in control rats The estrous cycle was delayed and the proportion of atresic follicle was also significantly increased in exposed rats Conclusion The ovary, like the kidney seemed to be one of the important target organs of cadmium The effect of cadmium on the female gonad was shown to have the extrous cycle delayed and the proportion of atresic follicle increased
