Correlation between heart rate variability and N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes complicated with heart failure

Objective To evaluate correlation between heart rate variability( HRV) and N terminal brain natriuretic peptide( NT-proBNP) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes complicated with heart failure. Methods A total of 90 patients with type 2 diabetes were divided into heart failure group( n = 44) and non-heart failure control group( n = 46) according to serum NT-proBNP level. HRV parameters were detected by 24 hours dynamic electrocardiogram to evaluate the indicators of heart rate variability including standard deviation of all adjacent normal RR intervals within 24 h( SDNN),the standard deviation of average RR interval for average every 5 min within 24 h( SDANN),and index of standard deviation of normal RR interval for every 5 min( SDNN index).Ratio of number of adjacent normal RR intervals( rMSSD) to total sinus stroke( PNN50). The correlation between HRV and NT-proBNP level was explored. Results The indicators of SDNN,SDANN,SDNNindex,rMSSD and PNN50 in heart failure group were decreased compared to the control group( P 0. 05 or P 0. 01). There were negative correlations between SDNN,SDANNindex,rMSSD,PNN50 and serum NT-proBNP levels in heart failure group( rs=-0. 369,-0. 389,-0. 298,-0. 356,-0. 435,P 0. 05 or P 0. 01). There were no significant correlation between HRV time domain indexes and NT-proBNP level in the control group. Conclusion Regular detection of serum NT-proBNP level can evaluate the injury severity of cardiovascular autonomic nervous function in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes complicated with heart failure.
