Protective effects of total flavonoids of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bge on potassium bromate-induced kidney damage in mice

Aim To investigate the protective effects of total flavonoids of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bge.(TFA)on potassium bromate(KBrO_3)-induced kidney damage in mice.Methods The kidney damage model was established by receiving a single ip administration of 200 mg·kg-1 KBrO_3 in mice.Serum creatinine level and contents of glutathione(GSH),cysteine(Cys)and Vitamin C in kidneys were determined by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).TBARS method was performed to detect levels of malondialdehyde(MDA)in kidneys.Antioxidative activities of TFA in vitro and oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC)in kidneys were determined by automated multifunctional microplate reader.Results Compared with the model group,TFA could effectively decrease serum creatinine level and contents of MDA in kidneys.In contrast,ORAC activity and contents of GSH,Cys and Vitamin C in kidneys increased in mice treated with TFA.In addition,TFA indicated marked antioxidative action in vitro.Conclusion Our findings suggested that protective effects of TFA on KBrO_3-induced kidney damage related to its free radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory effect.
