Embryonic stem cells(ESCs)are highly undifferentiated cells with infinite ability to proliferate and to differentiate into cells from three germ layers. So,ESCs could be used as a tool for toxicity evaluation.Metabonomics is a new subject developed recently to analysis low molecular weight endogenous metabolites of an organism or cell quantitatively and qualitatively.Metabonomics is usually used for studying biological fluids, cells extract, cells culture medium and tissue by using nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrum techniques. In this paper we reviewed experimental techniques related to ESCs and metabonomics and its current application status in toxicology. At the same time,we approach the application and the prospect of embryonic stem cell-based metabonomics in toxicology research.
