Effects of tetrahydropalmatine on the peripheralcatecholamine contents in rats

The effects of tetrahydropalmatine(THP) on the catecholamine (CA) contents in the peripheral tissues of rats were studied by means of HPLC-ED.Itwas found that dl-THP(5~20 mg·kg-1, iv) induced dose-dependant decrease of noradrenaline(NA) in the heart. aorta and femmoral artery and reduction of adrenaline ( A) in the adrenal gland. And yet l-THP(5~20 mg· kg-1, iv) only lowered NA contents in the peripheral tissues mainly in vessels, but he change of A in the adrenal gland was not significant, The above-mentioned action of dl-and l-THP could be antagonized by clonidine, suggesting that the reduction of NA induced by THP may be related to blocking pre-synapticα2-receptor so as to increase NA release. We guess that CA-decreasing action dl-THPis at least the partial cause of its prolonged hypotensive and brady cadiac effects.
