A Single Gene Controlled Fertility-restoring Revertant from Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Rice

A fertility revertant T24 from cytoplasmic male sterile(CMS)rice line Ⅱ-32A was induced by dry seed irradiation with 60Co-γrays.The revertant,when still heterogenous,segregated into male fertile and complete male sterile plants in a ratio of 3∶1.Testcrosses of the heterogenous revertant with Ⅱ-32A and Zhenshan 97A displaied 1∶1 segeragation between fertile plants and sterile plants.Besides,the F2 hybrids between Ⅱ-32A and Zhenshan 97A and the stabilized revertant line showed 3∶1 segregation between fertile and male sterile plants. These indicate that the fertility reversion was resulted from the dominant mutation of the fertility gene in CMS line.The revertant might differ in restoring mechanism from other restorer lines,such as Minghui 63 and 20964, which behave in a pattern of two pairs of restoring genes.T24 and its parent Ⅱ-32A menifested no difference except in fertility,therefore,they could be considered as near isogenic lines of fertility-restoring gene.The potential usefulness in study on CMS mechanism and breeding value of the revertant were also discussed.
