Evaluation of Low kV Technique in Craniocervical Computed Tomographic Angiography

Purpose:Low - kV technique can reduce the radiation dose.We want to use the raw data of dual - energy(DE) craniocervical computed tomography angiography(CTA) from a DSCT scanner to evaluate the image quality and the feasibility of low - kV scan.Methods:Twenty consecutive patients (mean age 63 years,ranged from 44 to 75 years),who had undergone cervical and cranial CTA,were enrolled.All patients were scanned with DE protocol with a dual - source CT system(Siemens Somatom Definition).High kV(120),low kV(80),and DE axial images were retrospectively reconstructed,and CT values and noise values of carotid artery and sternocleidomastoid muscle were measured at the level of the bifurcation of common carotid artery.The contrast,signal - to - noise ratio(SNR) and contrast-to - noise ratio(CNR) were calculated.When the noise of low kV images was high,the low - pass filter was used to reconstruct.Serial images were transferred to the workstation for CTA with maximum intensity projection(MIP) and volume rendering(VR).The image quality of CTA was evaluated with three grades(excellent,good,and poor).Paired t test was used for the statistic analysis.Results:Images obtained by 80 kV had the best enhancement and contrast but more noise,the SNR,CNR,and quality of the CTA images were good.Use of low - pass filter could significantly reduced the image noise.Conclusion: Excellent cervical and cranial CT angiography can be obtained by low kV technique.
