Synthesis and Characterization of Blue Luminescent Material: Poly(2,5-dihexyloxyparaphenylene)

Poly(2,5-dihexyloxyparaphenylene)(DHO-PPP) which is soluble in common organic solvent has been synthesized by oxidation coupling polymerization of 1,4-dihexyloxybenzene using iron chloride as catalyst in chloroform. The resulting polymer DHO-PPP is readily soluble in common organic solvents and can be easily processed into uniform films from solution. The structure of DHO-PPP is confirmed by FTIR. The content of 1,3-linkage in the polymer is calculated to be 45 %, according to nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrum(~1H NMR). The maximum absorption of solution in chloroform in UV-Vis spectrum is located at 351 nm (E_2 absorption band). The E_2 band occurs about a (51 nm) red-shift in contrast to that of poly(paraphenylene) (PPP). The peak of photoluminescence of DHO-PPP solution in chloroform is located at 423.8 nm and shows very high photoluminescence intensity because of the long side chain. The thermal properties and crystallinity of DHO-PPP have also studied by TGA, DSC and XRD.
