Antagonistic actron of piracetam on impaired aviodance responses in AlCLI3 poisoned rats

Shuttle avoidance responses method was used. The result showed that the acquisition of the responses in normal rats was increased by piracetam (2-oxo-l pyrrolidine acetamide, 100 mg/kg, ip, once daily), and the reduction of acquisition was observed in rats poisoned with A1C13 (50 mg/kg, ip, once daily, total 250 mg/kg). Piracetam (100 mg/kg, ip, twice-daily) antagonized the inhibition of acquisition. The inhibition of retention of responses was also observed in rats poisoned with A1C13 (lg/ kg, ip, once daily). Piracetam (100 mg/kg, ip, twice daily) could also antagonize the inhibition of retention. Since the impairment of cognition in man with aging brain or Alzheimer's disease was simulated by animal model in present study, these results support the hypothesis that piracetam is beneficial to one's with aging brain or Alzheimer's disease.
