Surface Features and Microstructures of Activated Sludge in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant

Optical microscope,scanning electron microscope( SEM),and particle size analyzer were used to investigate the surface features and microstructures of activated sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant. The results showed that the zoogloeae had compact structures,great quantities,and irregular shapes. The parts of filamentous bacteria extended out from the activated sludge flocs,and connected the different flocs. A plenty of various protozoa were observed and a few micrometazoa were also found in the activated sludge. SEM observation displayed that the activated sludge was composed of numerous bacteria and organic matters and so on. The cocci predominated in the microorganism of sludge. The activated sludge flocs of 100 μm particle size had a maximal ratio,up to7. 6%. This study clearly revealed the surface features and microstrcures of activated sludge.
