THE PHYTOGEOGRAPHICAL AFFINITIES OF PTERIDOPHYTES BETWEEN CHINA AND JAPAN

This paper a preliminary account on the phytogcographical affinities of Pleridophytcs between China and Japan. They are generalized as follows. 1. The Fern-flora between China and Japan is closely related. There are 7 common endemic genera e. g. Ptilopteris, Drymotaenium, Saxiglossum, Chi-eniopteris, Leptorumhra, Cyrtomidictyum, Leptomicrosorium and 461 species in two countries which occupy 74.5% of the total species of Japan.A demonstrative composition of Fern-flora from the two countries, perhaps, the majoritis of ferns are Dryopteridaecae and Athyriaceae. It shows that the Fern-flora in two countries was formed before the Japacsc Island separated from the Chinense continent in the end of Tertiary. The Sino-Japan Fern-flora has the same origin and is being parallely developed up to now. Some species of ferns which widely distributed in Japan are scatterly distributed along the coast of China (or vice versa). We consider that these species may be newly added in the last regin. 2. Some of species which are widely distributed in north temperate zone and in the north part of Japan are only distributed in the northest and north part of China toward the southern extending to Qinling mountain-Funriu Shan while a few species extending to Lu-Shan, Jiangxi Province. But some of the widely distributed species in subtropical and the south part of Japan are only distributed in southern part of China. These species are distributed toward the northern extending to Lu-Shan, the western extending to Emei Shan and southeast and northeast of Yunnan. This case shows that there are large similarities between each of the modern condition in China and Japan,On the other hand, it also shows that the above mountain system of China playcs a great role on effecting distribution of plants. 3. Comparatively speaking, the common species of Fern-flora of Japan arc less from the Fren-flora of the Himalayas. There are more endemic genera and species in the Sino-Himalayas. This is because the uplift of the Himalayas which greatly changes the natural features of the region. Both floras were farmly a common flora but individually developed and separated in the long progress of history. The view of Fern-flora of Sino-Himalayas were divided into two subregions- Sino Hiamalayan and Sino-Japan subregions is supported by the case.Emei Shan is a transition place of Sino-Hiamalyas elements extending eastwards and Sino-Japan dements extending westwards. 4. The Japanese Fern-flora has no directly contact with the flora of ferns of northwest of China, particully that of Xinjiang Province. There are only three common species of ferns in both Japan and Xinjiang.But the species come to Japan and Xinjiang from different ways. 5. There are many vicarious species among the flora of ferns in these two countries. This vicarious species are vary closely related and were, indeed, considered by many botanists as one or same species. These species indicate the relationship between the two subregions and also show the differentiations in the progress of historic evolution in these two subregions. 6. The above discriptions are based on the knowlege on hand. There will be some little change in composition and distribution of Fern-flora in two countries, by the exchange and cooperation between Chinense botanists and Japanese botanists.
