On the number phrase "number + classifier + noun"

Y-H Audrey Li & Bingfu Lu
Nominal expressions of the form "number + classifier + noun" are ambiguous, interpreted either as individual-denoting expressions headed by a nominal (or a zero determiner) or as a quantity-denoting expression headed by a numeral. The former is an indefinite expression and can be defined according to properties regarding reference and definiteness. The latter is quantity-denoting; it does not denote entities and cannot be defined according to reference or definiteness. Such differences between these two types account for many interesting differences in their behavior, such as the (un)acceptability in occurring in subject or topic positions (which disallow an indefinite expression), the (non)availability of entering co-reference or binding relations with a pronoun or an anaphor, the (im) possibility of scope interaction with another nominal expression. Recognizing the ambiguity of " number + classifier + noun" expressions readily solves some outstanding issues in the literature. The paper also briefly discusses the nature of formalizing the said distinctions in syntax.
