EFFECTS ON BLOOD PRESSURE AND INFLA MMATION OF ASTRAGALUS SAPONIN 1,A PRINCIPLE ISOLATED FROM ASTRAGALUS MEMBRANACEUS BGE

This paper reports the pharmacological activities of Astragalus saponin 1, a principle isolated from "Huang Oi" (Astragalus membranaceus Bge).Astragalus saponin 1 Was shown to produce anti-inflammatory action and to lower blood pressure. When given intravenously (5 mg/kg) or orally (50 mg/kg) the component inhibited the increase in vascular permeability caused by 5-HT and histamine. The reduction rate of inflammatory action was 55.93% and 38.02% respectively. If Astragalus saponin 1 was administered orally at a doses of 25 mg/kg, 50 mg/ kg or 100 mg/kg, marked reduction in carrageenin-induced edema of the hind paw of rats was noted-. The inhibitory activity was shown to be dose-dependent. Lowering of blood pressure was demonstrated by intravenous administration of the saponin 15mg or 10mg/kg in anesthetized cats or rats. The resistance of the vascular bed of hind limb was reduced when 0.25 mg/kg Astragalus saponin 1 of was injected close-arterially to cats.
