Objective To investigate the effects of maternal body weight on the morbidity of gestational diabetes mellitus, changes of intestinal microflora composition and prognosisin pregnant women. Methods Intestinal microbial flora of faecal specimens from pregnant women was studied when having a heath check at the PLA 113 hospital using intestinal flora in vitro culture and 16 S rRNA gene clone library construction methods. The changes of body weight and blood sugar were also detected. A questionnaire was filled out about pregnant women nutritional status, habits and lifestyles. And a medical examination of offspring was recorded and itsdelivery mode. Results The survey results showed that pre- pregnancy obesity ratio was 15. 2% and obesity due to excessive weight gain during pregnancy was 17. 4% of 512 pregnant women, and the ratio of gestational diabetes mellitus was 7. 8% in obesity before pregnancy and during pregnancy groups. The incidence of macrosomia, cesarean section rates in obesity before pregnancy and during pregnancy groups were significantly higher than the normal weight group( P 0. 05). Compared with the normal weight group, before pregnancy and during pregnancy obesity group had no significant changes in the category of intestinal flora, but obesity group contains more kinds of thick wall bacteria, fewer species of bacteroidetes. Conclusion The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus, macrosomia and cesarean section rate were increased in obese before pregnancy and during pregnancy groups, together with changes in intestinal flora diversity. Develop healthy diet standards for pregnant women will regulate the intestinal flora at the beginning, and this will control the weight gain during pregnancy and reduce the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus and complications.
