Effects of fire disturbance on soil carbon and nitrogen pools in coastal sandy plantation forests

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of mild forest fire disturbance on soil carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) pools in coastal sandy plantation forests.Soil C and N stocks,dissolved organic carbon(DOC) and nitrogen(DON) concentration,microbial biomass carbon(MBC) and nitrogen(MBN) concentration and mineral N concentration were measured after three year of fire disturbance in Eucalyptus urophylla × E.grandis and Casuarina equisetifolia plantations.The results showed that fire disturbance significantly affected soil C and N pools of Casuarina equisetifolia plantation,but had little effect on those of Eucalyptus urophylla × E.grandis plantation.Compared with the unburned stands,the Eucalyptus urophylla × E.grandis soils after fire disturbance had 13.5%,27.7%,2.9%,13.7%,respectively,higher C and N stocks,DOC and MBC,and 51.3%,14.7%,58.0%,respectively,lower DON,MBN and mineral N.However,for the Casuarina equisetifolia plantation,mild fire disturbance decreased soil C and N stocks,DOC,DON,MBC,MBN,mineral N by 27.9%,24.6%,38.6%,41.1%,24.5%,25.4%,31.7%,respectively.Regression analysis indicated that soil p H was significantly correlated with NO3-N,DON and MBN.In conclusion,our study suggested that mild fire changes soil C and N pools through its effect on soil C and N stocks and labile C and N,and such effect depends on tree species.
