The humidifying effect of green space during spring in the Yuxi Park of Shijiazhuang City of China

As one of the important part of the urban ecosystem, urban green spaces play an irreplaceable role in maintaining carbon and oxygen balance, absorbing pollution and removing dust, killing bacteria, and purifying soil and water body. Therefore, a study on the urban green lands has important significance. In order to study the humidifying effect of different underlying surfaces, the authors monitored the air humidity below the height of 1.8 m above the ground of various underlying surfaces, including arbor-grass lands, shrub lands, herb lands, and a cement pavement, during late February and late April in 2015 and 2016, when it was sunny without wind, in the Yuxi Park of Shijiazhuang. The results were compared with the monitoring data of a bare land that has an area of 190 m × 120 m. The results of the study could be summarized as follows:(1) the humidifying effect of green spaces was the weakest at 8:00 during the midday in late February, whereas it was the strongest at 10:00; from late March to late April, the humidifying effect of green spaces strengthened with the increase of air temperature, and the strongest effect was noted at 12:00–16:00 and the weakest at 8:00.(2) The humidifying effect of various types of green lands was the strongest close to the ground surface of each monitoring stage in the spring, and then reduced from the height of 0.2 m to 1.8 m. This vertical stratification became more apparent after the plants sprouted, and the humidifying effect of the herb lands declined the most in the vertical direction, followed by the arbor-grass lands; the smallest humidifying effect was noted for shrub lands.(3) Multiple comparison analysis of the data of humidity recorded at 12:00 showed that evergreen species reached a significant level(P 0.05), showing that garden plants have a strong effect on atmospheric humidity in the spring.(4) The humidifying effect of an artificial lake was relatively remarkable before the plants sprouted; however, with the rapid growth of plant leaves, the artificial lake's effect gradually weakened compared to that by vegetation, and its relative influence was also progressively weakened. The humidifying effect of green space before germination is controlled by atmospheric temperature and water storage capacity of plants and soils. However, from the stage of plants sprouting to plants flourishing,the transpiration intensity of plant leaves is the dominant factor determining the humidifying effect of green lands. The humidifying effect of green lands was also controlled by the density, canopy density, and plant height, the most obvious impact of which is groundcover transpiration and soil water evaporation. Although the humidifying effect in spring was weaker than that in summer and autumn, the effect of humidification was more complicated during the growth of green leaves in spring than in summer and autumn. This is useful to construct the theory system of ecological environment effect of green lands in spring, summer, and autumn.
