A STUDY OF THE THEORIES OF CHINESE LANDSCAPE PLANTING RELATED TO THE COMPOSITON OF GARDEN DESIGN

Sun Siao-shiang (Peking Forestry Institute)
Landscape painting as an art together with its theories appeared in the fifth century in China. Topographical treatment in Chinese garden-making is the artistic sketch of natural land-scape, and garden plant arrangement is the artistic appearance of natural plant associations. Both these two subjects are treated similarly in Chinese landscape painting as in their garden-making. Furthermore, moving bird's-eye view method is usually used in Chinese land-scape painting which is also a matter of common practice in Chinese landscape gardening. In the past, Chinese gardens were mostly designed by landscape painters. At the same time theoretical treatises of landscape gardening were also mostly written by them. This is the reason why the theories of painting and those of garden-making are often exchangeable and mutually supplementary in China. In this paper most of the theories of Chinese landscape painting related to the composition of garden design as well as those of flower-and-bird painting in the past times are analysed systematically into the following categories: 1. design before painnting, 2. predominance of main scene, 3. unity in variety and 4. beginning and ending. Examples of garden design are cited and discussed under the different topics. The author considers that the theories of Chinese landscape painting are very important and useful to the creation of new Chinese style in garden-making if they are properly analysed and utilized.
