PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS ON FLOWER BUD DIFFERENTIATION OF MYRICA RUBRA S. ET Z.

1. Flower bud differentiation of Mrica rubra S. et Z. begins shortly after the summer shoots cease to grow. Inflorescences primodia of the culti-vars"Narrow Leaf Green"and"White" ,start their physiological differentiation at the beginning or in the middle of July. The early stage abortive pistillate inflorescences emerge but do not open the next spring, and then abscise. Inflorescences which differentiated after early August are normal ones. 2. Inflorescences of the male trees of M. rubra are of the multiplicate catkin type, consisting of 15-20 small inflorescences, each of which carries 4-6 blossoms on the short floral axis; whereas pistillate inflorescences are of the catkin type. 3.Morphological differentiation of the primodia of inflorescences of the male trees begins in the middle of July, and the first small flower primodia begins to form late in July. The formation of inflorescence primodia of the female trees begins at the end of the same month. The cultivars "Narrow Leaf Green"and"White"form their flower primodia from late August to early September respectively, while the stamens and pistils appear from September to November. Flower bud differentiation stops at the end of November. 4. The inflorescences give rise to pistillate and staminate blossoms systematically, starting from their upper and middle parts, which are then followed by those at the tops, and finally those at their bases. Blossoms at the lower parts of pistillate inflorescences show signs of poor or abortive de-velopment. 5. Physiological differentiation of the flower buds comes 2-4 weeks earlier than that of the morphological differentiation, and the flower pri-modia take about 3 months to complete their differentiation .Summer and spring shoots often developed into fruiting shoots, in contrast to the autumn shoots, which are unable to form flower buds. It requires a month to form the first flower primodia on the inflorescence primodia.All good cultural practices before this period will therefore lay a firm material foundation necessary for flower bud differentiation. 6. The root of M . rubra harbors symbiotic mycorrhiza association and possibly fixes atmospheric nitrogen. However, appropriate applications of N fertilizer before flower-bud differentiation, especially in the "off" years, often bring about an inerease both in the percentage and speed of flower-bud differentiation.
