A STUDY ON THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC RATE OF SAND PEAR [PYRUS PYRIFOLIA ( BURM. ) NAKAI] UNDER FIEID CONDITIONS

The photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content thirteen varieties of sand pear and the four hybrid progenies were determined. The results indicated that the, photosynthetic rate of pear was mostly within the range of 11 to 15 mgco2dm-2h-1. The chlorophyll content in the leaves was within 2.01 to 2.90 mg per g. It was found that there was a significant positive correlation between the photosynthetic rate and the chlorophyll content. The varieties with higher chlorophyll content usually showed a higher photosynthetic rate 。The photosynthetic rate of the hybrids showed much segregation which indicated a quantitative inheritance. The average photosynthetic rate of the hybrids tended to decrease slightly. Light saturation point of photosynthesis was found to be about 55 klx, while the compensation point was about 2klx. As the leaves grow for about 35 days, they reached the highest photosynthetic rate, which continued about 70 days. The highest photosynthetic rate in the course of one year was found at the end of May, which continued to the latter half of July.The photosynthetic rate during one day varied according to the change of temperature and light intensity. In early summer, it reached the highest point at 10:00 to 14:00, while in mid-summer reached the highest point at 6:00 to 8: 00 in the morning and fell below zero at 12:00 to 14:00.
