Influence of Low Temperature Stress on Cucumber Membrane-lipid Peroxidation

Effect of low temperature stress on cell membranelipid peroxidation was studied in cucumber (Cucumis satirus L. ) cultivars with different coldtolerance. A marked increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) contnet, a main product of membrancelipid peroxidation, was obseved in cucumber seedlings subjected to low temperature (12.5/5.5℃, d/n) . The increment of MDA in different cultivars inversely correlated with the chillinginjury degrees of seedlings. The low temperature teatment also increased proxidase (POD) activity, and some new protein bands for POD isozyme on electrophoretogram were noted. Seedling catalase (CAT) activity, however, exhibited a decrease in response to the cold stress. The changes in POD and CAT activities show a positive correlation with the cultivar cold tolerance. Based on these results, we suggest that MDA content and activities of POD and CAT could be used as criteria for evaluating germplasm for cold tolerance. 
