EFFECTS OF RESTRAINT STRESS ON THE EXPR ESSION OF METALLOTHIONEINS IN HIPPOCAMPUS OF RAT

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of restraint stress on the expression of metallothioneins in rat. Methods: The animal model of psychological stress was developed by restraint stress. The rats were randomly assigned to four groups as follows: control group and three stress groups that received restraint stress one, two or four weeks respectively. Results: The body weight of stressed rats decreased obviously, and plasma cortisol and IL-6 were both increased significantly in contrast to those of control group. MT-1 mRNA and MT-3 mRNA in hippocampus were also increased in rats receiving restraint s tress. Conclusion: Restraint stress can increase the expressions of metallothioneins and their mRNAs in rats. The possible mechanism is up-regulation of cortisol and IL-6.
