Re? ections on the 70-year Development of Foreign Language Teaching and Research in China

This study attempts to examine foreign language education and research in the past 70 years through a comprehensive review. The ? ndings show that the past 70 years, and the last 40 years in particular, have witnessed tremendous development in the areas of foreign language education and research in China. The development has enhanced teaching and boosted research endeavours, thus enabling Chinese researchers to advance at the same pace with their international counterparts. Albeit of the impressive accomplishments, due to specialties of the Chinese style curriculum, the sector faces a series of grave challenges in both teaching and research. These challenges arise mostly from the problems intrinsic in the infrastructure. In conclusion, the author argues that the experience of the past 70 years' development suggests that the only way to further academic research in foreign languages is through opening the door to the outside world and actively engaging in dynamic dialogues with the international scholarly community.
