Effect of curcumin on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and blood-lipids in patients with coronary heart disease

AIM: To observe the effect of curcumin on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and blood-lipids in patients with coronary heart disease(CHD). METHODS: Adopting the randomized controlled method,64 CHD patients were divided into two groups.34 cases in curcumin group(G1 group) were given(orally) curcumin capsule 100 mg once after breakfast、lunch and supper respectively.30 cases in atorvastatin group(G2 group) were given orally atorvastatin 10 mg once after supper.The treatment courses of the two groups lasted 6 weeks.Serum levels of total cholesterol(TC)、triglycerides(TG) low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)、high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) and high-sensitivity CRP(Hs-CRP) at the beginning and after 6 weeks of treatment were measuered respectively. RESULTS: After 6 weeks of treatment,the level of TC、TG、LDL-C and Hs-CRP in G1 group decreased by 5.2%,18.6%,7.5% and 65.1% respectively,and that in G2 group decreased by 13.2%,7.0%,12.2% and 68.8% respectively.The level of HDL-C in both groups increased by 3.6% and 5.5% respectively.There was no significant difference in the decrease level of Hs-CRP and the increase level of HDL-C between the two groups(P(0.05)).The decrease level of TC and LDL-C in G2 groups was lower than in G1 group,showing significant difference with that in G1 group(P0.01 and P0.05).The decrease level of TG in G1 group was lower than G2 group,showing significant difference between them(P0.05). CONCLUSION: Curcumin has the effect on regulating blood lipids and antagonizing inflammatory response.
