Studies on the Pathogenic Factors of Keshan Disease in the Grains Cultivated in Endemic Regions

Wang Fan Li Guangsheng An Ruguo Yang Tongshu
Keshan diasease is an endemic car-diomyopathy.We consider it as a bio-geochemical disease. In our studies onthe etiology of Keshan disease, thefollowing points have been preliminari-ly revealed:1.Based on the morphological stu-dies,it has been shown that the pathol-ogical properties of myocadial necrosisofKeshan disease are ischemic or anoxic.2.It has been proved by the methodof experimental pathology that the pa-thogenic factors of Keshan disease exi-sted in the grains cultivated in the ende-mic regions. These factors had an abi-lity to elicit some changes of calciummetabolism and the activity of oxidasesin the myocardium. There were pecu-liar cooperative relations between thesefactors and nitrite.Under the coordina-tion of nitrite, more serious myocardialnecroses might be produced by thesepathogenic factors. The additiou ofammonium molybdate to the grains fromthe endemic regions produced obviousprophylactic effect in reducing the my-ocardial injury in experimental animals.3.After an observation on ferti-lizing the soil in endemic region by am mo-nium molybdate, the preliminary resultshave shown that this measure seemedto be effective in preventing Keshandisease.
