EFFECTS OF SELENIUM OR MOLYBDENUM SUPPLEMENTATION ON SARCOLEMIC MEMBRANE DAMAGE OF CARDIOMYOCYTES INDUCED BY FEEDING GRAINS FROM KESHAN DISEASE ENDEMIC AREA IN RATS——A Study with Horeradish Peroxidase(HRP)as a Tracer

To evaluate the effects ofselenium or molybdenum supple-mentation on sarcolemmic membr-ane damage of myocardial cellsinduced by feeding grains fromKeshan disease endemic area,a study using HRP as a tracerwas carried out.Weanling ratsof both sexes were divided intothree groups:(1)endemic graingroup;(2)Se-supplemented group(0.1mg Na_2Seo_3/Kg endemic graindiet)and(3)Mo-supplementedgroup(100mg(NH_4)_6Mo_7,O_(24)4H_2O/Kg endemic grain diet).The rats were given intrave-nously HRP(5mg/100g body wei-ght)after 3 months and thepresence of HRP reaction productin the myocardium was examinedby light microscopy.The results showed that thenumber of the myocytes contain-ing HRP reaction product in Se-orMo-supplemented group was ma-rkedly decreased as comparedwith those in the endemic graingroup(p0.01).There was nosignificant difference between Se-and Mo-supplemented groups(p0.05).The data obtained in thepresent work suggest that myocar-dial cell membrane damage elicitedby feeding grains from Keshandisease endemic area can be sign-ificantly alleviated by supplemen-tary Se or Mo.The protectiveeffects of Se or Mo on myocardialcell membrane integrity may playa role in the mechanism of theirefficaciousness in the preventionof Keshan disease.
