Sureveillance of endemic fluorosis of the drinking water type in China

The group for important surveillance on national fluorosis  
Objective The purpose of this study was to understand and master the conditions and trends of endemic fluorosis timely,accurately,and systematically,to grasp the processes and the effects of prevention and control,and to provide evidences for the formulation of scientific strategies in prevention and control.Methods Epidemiological investigation methods were adopted.Dental fluorosis of children were examined by Dean's Index.The fluoride content in drinking water and in the urine of children were determined by fluoride selective ion electrode.Results In surveillance counties of the drinking water type disease areas,the average rate of complete water improving was 50.92% in 1996 and 50.27% in 1997.The average qualified rate of the fluoride concentration in drinking water for water improving projects was 61.19%.The average fluoride content in the urine of children was 2.00mg/L in 1996 and 1.97mg/L in 1997.The prevalence rate of dental fluorosis of childen was 47.60% in 1996 and 47.74% in 1997 respectively.Conclusions At present,water improving was completed in nearly half of the surveillant disease areas all over the country.But this work was not conducted simultaneously.In some counties,it was even stagnated.After defluoridation,only 61.59% of all the drinking water were qualified.The content of fluoride in drinking water has raised again seriously in some water improving areas.It is an effective measure to improve and defluoridate the water for the prevention of the endemic fluorosis.Because the preventive measures have been put into effect very slowly,and there still existed a lot of problems in the quality of this project,the fluoride content in drinking water has raised again,exceeded the standard,and made the disease conditions more serious.Furthermore,the measure of improving and defluoridating water must be adopted widely.
