Surveillance on Keshan Disease in Huangling County, Shaanxi Province in 2004

Objective To monitor the prevalence of Keshan disease in Huangling County, Shaanxi Provincein 2004. Methods all local residents in surveillance area of Keshan disease were regarded as surveillance subjectsand were given overall examinations. The selenium contents in hair and rice were monitored in surveillance area.Results (1) No new case of acute or sub-acute patient was found. Latent and chronic patients detected accountedfor 11%; (2) Only 1 case of latent Keshan disease was newly detected; (3)Selenium contents of children's hair andrice in the area monitored were significantly lower than those of non-endemic areas (P 0.05). Conclusions Therate of diagnosed Keshan disease is going up slowly. Still new case of latent Keshan disease is seen in Huanglingcounty, Shaanxi province.
