Improvement of Radiation Mode Method

With an example of simply supported rectangular panel, this paper presents a new method for analysis of structure borne sound by radiation mode method. First, the physical characteristics and mathematical meaning of the radiation modes are analyzed. Then the degrees of freedom for radiation modes are discussed. It is shown that radiation mode shapes are frequency dependent. This makes the application of the radiation modes very difficult for active noise control. A new technique to improve the radiation mode is developed, by which radiation mode shapes are frequency independent at middle and low frequencies. The numerical results show that this technique is useful.
