New Modeling Method for Active Noise Control within an Irregular Enclosure

A new modeling method is developed for active minimization of noise within a thr ee dimensional irregular enclosure using distributed piezoelectric actuators. I t may be used to provide a practical way for noise control engineering. The irre gular enclosure is modeled with four rigid walls and two flexible panels, and se veral pairs of PZT actuators are bonded to one of the flexible panels. The proce s s of the new modeling method for the irregular enclosure is as follows. Firstly modal coupling method is used to establish the governing equations of motion fo r an acoustic structural piezoelectric coupling system. Then the acoustic modes an d the modal masses of the irregular enclosure are calculated by numerical method . At last the modal coupling coefficients in the governing motion equations are calculated according to the numerical results of the acoustic modes of the irreg ular enclosure and the theoretical functions of panel modes. The validity of the se calculations is verified by a regular hexahedron enclosure. Two cost function s related respectively to global and local control of sound pressure are app lied to this model. With the two cost functions, good results are obtained in mi nimizing noise level within the irregular enclosure according to numerical inves tigations. Experiments are conducted in order to validate the theoretical result s and the modeling method. It is found that in local scheme the experimental results are close to that obtained from simulations.
