Topological Sensitivity Method for the Optimal Placement of Unconstrained Damping Material in Structures

The concepts of damping cell element and damping topological sensitivit y are proposed, and a topological optimization criterion for placement of uncons trained damping material in a structure by overall evaluation of the damping to p ological sensitivity is presented. The optimization procedure consists of three steps. First, the topological ground structure covered by damping material is c onstructed, and elements in the ground structure are defined as damping cell ele ments, then the damping topological sensitivity of each element is computed. Sec ond, the topology optimization model with weight objective and frequency respons e constraints is formulated. Finally, the problem is solved by means of the prop osed optimal criterion, and the topological value of each element is determined. Several typical examples show the validity of the presented method. The relati on of the scale of damping material ground structure with optimization effective ness is also discussed.
