Regional vulnerability assessment of debris flows

Based on the definition of vulnerability published by the Department of Humanitarian Affairs, United Nations, the present paper discusses the representative factors influencing regional vulnerability of debris flows and the factor quantification as well as the relationships between the factors and the vulnerability. Also this paper discusses the quantitative model of regional vulnerability assessment of debris flows. Regional vulnerability reflects the socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the base surfaces impacted by debris flows, which relates to fixed assets, gross domestic products, land resources, population density and population quality (age, education, wealthy). Regional vulnerability of debris flows mathematically expressed as a square root of the average of the transformed values of property and population. This methodology has been applied to Liangshan State of Sichuan Province and a good agreement has been achieved.
