An Overview of the Chinese Communist Party History Research in 1977 and 1978

Wu Zhijun
In the two-year period after the end of the "Cultural Revolution" and before the convening of the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh CPC Central Committee, with the preliminary initiation of setting things right and the arrival of the surging intellectual and cultural currents, the Party history research began to get rid of the shackles of extreme "Leftist" thought. The rise of "re-evaluation" historiography and the cultural criticism of Lecture Sheets on the History of the Communist Party of China compiled under the direction of the "Gang of Four" effectively promoted the drive to restore things to order in the Party history research. As a result,a new pattern of research began to take shape and the academic atmosphere started to prevail.
