Displacement-based seismic design method for RC continuous girder bridges

HUANG Jian-wen, ZHU Xi (School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China)  
The reinforced concrete continuous girder bridges are simplified as the MDOF elastic system by using equivalent elastic method. On the basis of elastic response spectrum-based approach including the effects of higher modes,authors present the direct displacement-based seismic design method for RC continuous girder bridges, which is applied to the transverse response of bridge structures. The effects of stiffness variation of main beams and bridge columns or abutments on the modal mass and periods of transverse vibration are discussed, and the detailed design procedure of the proposed method is outlined. The displacement-based seismic design for the symmetrical and asymmetrical continuous bridges is studied by using the same design procedure, and the design results of respective examples are analyzed and checked by using dynamic inelastic time-history analysis in order to clarify the reasonableness of design results.
