Treatment of Posterior Capsule Opacification after Lens Implantation with Nd∶YAG Laser in Children

he aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of posterior capsulectomy with Nd∶YAG laser in children with posterior capsule opacification after lens implantation (32 cases). Way of cooperation was informed to children before operation and their pupils were moderately dilated with mild mydriatic. Laser power was set at low energy (04 mJ) and increased gradually according to the individual reaction. Total energy was about 20 mJ-30 mJ per treatment session until the posterior capsule was penetrated centrally about 10 mm in diameter. Visual acuities recovered to their best levels before posterior capsule opacity took place in all cases. Corrected visual acuities were between 01 and 04 in 25 eyes, 05 and 08 in 5 eyes, over 10 in 2 eyes. 85% of the capsules were successfully opened with a single shot, no damage was found in IOL. Our fingings demonstrated that Nd∶YAG laser is very effective in opening the posterior capsule opacity and could avoid damage to IOL.
