Survey on implementation of Guangzhou Tobacco Control Regulation

Objective To understand the situation of Guangzhou Tobacco Control Regulation(shortened as Regulation)implementation after half a year and its impact on residents health behaviors.Methods 1200 residents were investigated by telephone interview to ask Regulation health effect on them.10 different kinds of workplaces and public places were selected by stratified sampling method.The information about no-smoking posters,cigarette ends,and smoking behavior in these places was recorded by observation method.PM2.5 was measured by AM510 for 30 minutes in all selected sites.Results 1023 residents were investigated and the proportion of respondents who knew Regulation was 83.48%.43.70% of them considered that the smoking behaviors had reduced in public places after Regulation implementation.The proportion of smoker among the respondents who had trying to quit or decrease smoking was increased from 43.23% to 58.33%(χ2=10.69,P=0.001).Only 3.49% of public places observed had not posted up no-smoking posters.The number of smokers who were found by the observer in restaurants or hotels was 61 and at the top.The median of indoor PM2.5 concentration in all places was 54.00 μg/m3.The average indoor PM2.5 concentration in bus-and train-stations,gyms,restaurants or hotels were higher than that in other places which had no cigarette ends or less(F=2.60,P=0.008).Conclusion The Regulation have promoted tobacco control in Guangzhou.Residents have been more conscious to tobacco control and social support environment have been established step by step.However,health education and policy advocacy should be enhanced in restaurants,hotels and their owners or managers.
