Blank Calculation for Sheet Metal Forming of a Square Cup

Inverse Approach has been adopted to calculate the blank shape for sheet metal forming and independent finite element program has been developed. A simple and effective method, named projecting and average method, has been proposed to obtain an initial value for blank shape, which is better than that from other method such as geometric method and trial and error method. Thus the convergence of the program has been improved greatly. The blank holding force has been applied to the nodes on the outer edge of the flange, and its magnitude at one node has been adjusted according to the length of elements edge that contained the node. It not only simplifies the program, but is reasonable as well. The program is stable and can be used to obtain the blank shape of a square cup with high precision effectively and rapidly.
