THE CHARACTER OF LEAP YEARS IN GUI MAO YUAN CALENDAR

Gui Mao Yuan Calendar had been put into use in China from 1742 to the period of the Republic of China (1912—1949), and its duration is nearly 200 years. The method of determining the leap year in the calendar, which selects 33 years as its periodicity, is to insert a leap year every four years from the 1st to the 28th year and the 8th leap year in the end of the period from the 29th to the 33rd year. Having its own character, Gui Mao Yuan Calendar is different from other main calendars in the world. It is one of the remarkable achievements which were required by Chinese astronomers and Western missionaries.
