Progress in treatment of benign essential blepharospasm

JIANG Yi;ZHOU Huaxiang;CHEN Jiali;Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine;
Benign essential blepharospasm is clinically one common ophthalmic disease. It is a kind of delayed focal dystonia, and its exact pathogenesis is unknown. With the change of lifestyle and surrounding environment, the incidence of the disease is increasing. And the disease is insidious, mainly caused by feeling strong light, pressure and the other mental factors. The disease progresses slowly and it is difficult to identify in ophthalmology and neurology clinics. So it is easy to be misdiagnosed and missed without diagnosis. In the early stage, the patients often show local symptoms of muscle pulsation and frequent blink around unilateral or bilateral eyelids. In the late stage, functional blindness may occur, which is affecting the work and life of those patients. In recent years, new research progress has been conducted with integrative treatment of TCM and western medicine and other treatments for benign essential blepharospasm. These treatments mainly consist of local injection, oral medication, surgical intervention, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and traditional Chinese medicine. Due to the specific advantages and the disadvantages of various treatments, grading treatment is often adopted according to the degree of blepharospasm in clinical practice. This paper made a brief review of it.
