Breeding and Phenotype Observation of Inbred Strain HFJ Rats

Objective To breed an inbred rat strain with high fecundity,and observe some of its phenotypes.Methods A couple of Wistar rats were selected for mating,and used as original generation.The stocks of every filial generation were selected from the rats with high fecundity,and were inbred with their brothers or sisters by optimum seeking method.After 20 generations,an inbred rat strain with high fecundity was established,and was named "HFJ".The genetic quality was determined by biochemical marker analysis and skin grafting.Some phenotypes of HFJ were observed and compared with those of Wistar rats.Results The HFJ rats met the requirement of the norm of inbred strain.The numbers of young rats in a litter,ablactation rates and litter intervals were significantly higher than those of Wistar rats.HFJ rats grew slower and their body weight was lower than that of Wistar rats after 12 weeks.Some of the routine blood indexes and the blood biochemical indexes of HFJ rats had significant differences with those of Wistar rats.Conclusion HFJ rats show characteristic features of high fecundity,and are a new inbred rat strain with uniform phenotypes.
